Wow, I'm only five posts in and I'm already sharing my deepest secrets with you. How amazing is that? Remember this when it comes time to nominate me for the MTV VMA Blogger of the Year award.
So my secret shame is this: I am a moderate to severe extreme couponer. This is so shameful that spell-check doesn't even recognize couponer as a word. I'm not sure what the scale for extreme couponer is, but I fall somewhere between functioning member of society/former Victoria's Secret model and potential star on Doomsday Preppers. If all you needed to survive the end of civilization was toothpaste, pasta, feminine hygiene products, spaghetti sauce, and cereal- because damn there are a lot of coupons for that kind of stuff.
Couponing has become a recent obsession for me and I think it has come from two things going on in my life:
1- Being a SAHM with no money of my own, married to a miser who won't even grant me the dignity of a $200 weekly allowance. I know. Unbelievable.
2- Crippling boredom during naptime/bedtime/preschooltime. Back when I was teaching, any 'down-time' was filled with grading papers, planning lessons, random paperwork, etc., but now... all I have is my scissors and the weekly inserts from the paper.
This past week was SUPER Triple Coupons at Schnucks, and for those with a life, that means coupons up to 75 cents are tripled. That's $2 whole dollars and 25 whole cents worth of savings! Imagine the possibilities! Half of a Grande Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks! The sleeve of a shirt from Target! A soda during lunch out with a friend! And much, much more!
I realized today that I had a problem when I got in the car after my fifth trip to Schnucks in a week, and not just any Schnucks- the worst Schnucks in the St. Louis area, aka the Schnucks in walking distance of my house. This Schnucks doesn't hire baggers, because they don't value you or your time. This Schnucks is letting the aisles go back to nature instead of spending the time cleaning it. This Schnucks doesn't believe in kids carts because it hates children. People have been killed in this Schnucks. This Schnucks doesn't give a damn about you and it wants you to know it. But I went there FIVE TIMES, once with my children (!!!!!!) all to save up to $2.25 on things like a 'Make-Your-Own-Bread Kit' that I would have never given a second look at before. And they make you take all these trips because they have a 15-coupon limit per trip/per family/per day. Do you see it? Do you see the dangerous web that extreme couponing weaves?
So if the first step to solving a problem is admitting you have a problem, than consider this my first step. I am tired of hiding in the aisles when another shopper walks by out of fear that they will see my coupons and consider me crazy. I am tired of picking the line where it looks like no one else will pick so the people behind me won't give me dirty looks while the checker types the coupon that didn't clear into the register. But most of all, I am tired of buying shit I don't really need or want all for the satisfaction of saving $2.25. That sweet, sweet savings.
I'm pretty sure the second step is drowning your sorrows at the Target Starbucks, so if you need me, I'll be there.

Mr. VanDernoot...Tear Down this Fence
This one right here.
SO, a few weeks ago my neighbor's dog started jumping the fence. Let me start this by saying that we like our neighbor, he is a nice man, we have a good relationship with him, he is most of the time an excellent neighbor. His dog is named Toshiba. It was originally named Sheba when he thought it was a girl, and then he found out it was a boy so he threw a To- in front of there to make it sound more masculine. Right.
He has had Toshiba for a few years and he has been a fine dog-neighbor. Not the best, not the worst. Out of nowhere, he started jumping the fence and basically spending most of his time in our backyard. Which is not the greatest thing considering I have three cats, two who like to be outside, and two kids who like to be outside too. And the dog has no problem being in the backyard while we are in the backyard, but I have a problem with it. Because pre-fence on top of fence, he ran one of my cats up a tree, attacked another cat and attacked my parents dog while we were dog-sitting. The dog attack was the last straw of our patience, and Jamie started to put up some garden fencing, which you can kind of see right above the wood in the foreground of the picture. He ran out, and when he woke up Sunday morning (I was out of town, grueling away at a super no-fun, uber-stressful convention), BAM- the picket fence was up. I haven't inspected it closely (combination of laziness and cold weather), so I don't know what it's held there with, but it has helped. No more Toshiba in the backyard.
HOWEVER, this cannot be the permanent solution. My backyard typically looks a mess anyway (an Ameren employee once asked me if I ran a home daycare), but I do have standards. Somewhere between being envious of other people's houses and neighborhoods but not embarrassed to invite people over to my house or neighborhood standards, but this fence on fence action is raising them a bit. So what do we do? Like I said before, we like our neighbor, he is a nice man and friendly guy so I don't really want to call the city on him, but it's kind of an awkward conversation to have. I don't even know if the chainlink fence is ours or his, our neighbors on the other side built this truly hideous tall wooden privacy fence, so I guess that was theirs, so it feels like this fence should be ours. My only real option is to pray for a tornado to come and do no damage to my house or new roof, but to blow the fence into the lot of the new QT, and then I'll have to go over there to check on it and the new QT manager will be there checking out the construction and I'll be like 'Hey' and she'll be like 'Hey' and I'll say 'Want to be best friends forever?' and she will already have my half of the best friend necklace ready to give me, and on the back she will have inscribed 'Present this half-heart for Free Fat Free French Vanilla Capuccinno's for LIFE' and then she'll slip me a card for free fountain soda's with crushed ice and I really do think I should have done a whole blog devoted to the new QT by my house. Because I have a lot of really great ideas.
Get to work, prayer warriors.

My cat came back! It's a blog miracle! After almost two weeks away, Jamie went looking for her this morning and she ran up to him and followed him home. And now we are reunited and it feels so good.
I forgot to mention that I also lost $500 a few weeks ago, so if that could come back to me too Blog Gods, that would be great.

Random
- Do I have to have a title every time I post? I'm going to try not having one next time and see how it goes.
- I have had this really filthy, inappropriate chant/song that my sorority used to sing during Candlelight ceremonies in my head, and I am always fighting the urge to sing it out loud because the song goes rapidly downhill after the third word, and is totally not toddler-friendly. But I really want to get a group together and just scream it. And then I start to think about that time in my life, when I lived in a 'house' with 40 other women and I get all nostalgic. Even though I'm perfectly happy in my life right now. If only Jamie would sing this dirty chant with me...Could this be the first sign of a mid-life crisis? I think yes. Jamaica, here I come!
- So the highlight of the last two weeks of H's life has been waiting for this new Chugginton episode, Rescue Heroes or something. We have watched it every day since it premiered, and one day- twice in one day. And they only watch two shows a day, so you know this is the hot shit of the moment. Kind of like the Breaking Bad Series Finale for the Disney Junior crowd. And H calls it 'Breakdown Chugginton'. So today it was his turn to pick the show after school and of course when I asked what he wanted to watch he said 'Breakdown Chugginton'. And I said, 'If I have to watch Breakdown Chuggington one more time, I'm going to Breakdown and start Chuggingten drinks.' And no one laughed. But me. They just looked at me annoyed for not turning the TV on right away. Sometimes being a SAHM is unrewarding.
- Our cat Phoebe is missing. It's been almost two weeks, which would not have been unusual five years ago, but it's been a while since she's left and not come back for more than a couple of days. I went to two different shelters to look for her today, although she's not really the type of cat to let herself be caught, and of course she wasn't there. The last room they brought me to at the Humane Society was a room with six cages and right next to the cages is a door that says MORGUE. It was sad. Made me glad cats can't read.
- On a happier note, I google searched my name to make sure that the blog didn't come up and I found this- http://games.crossfit.com/athlete/145568
I don't know if the blog will link to it or not, but if it doesn't it is the Athlete Profile of a Rachel VanDernoot who does Crossfit. Whatever that means. But it is apparently something athletic. She is also 31 and lives somewhere in Europe. But I'm pretty sure she has blonde hair. So basically she is just like me in every way. Crossfitting like a boss.
- My neighbor did this-
to our fence on his side. Keepin' it classy. I'm thisclose to calling code enforcement, but a friend told me if you call code enforcement on someone, then they come check out your house too and find something wrong. But I live in a palace, so what could be wrong? The story for why he did this is one for a future blog, so get excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And if you look in between the yellow house and the white house in the background, and squint your eyes just right, you can see the empty lot where there will someday be a QT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Practically in my backyard, if you ignore the houses and the busy road in between us. New QT and I are going to be like star-crossed lovers, separated by semi-trucks barreling down Page at 40 miles per hour. But it will only make our love grow stronger. I may be a little excited for this. Another possible blog idea was 'Countdown to QT' and would be totally devoted to the construction of my new favorite place on earth and then the CEO of QT would read it and out of gratitude for all the free publicity and undying loyalty/enthusiasm, he would agree to install a 'Fat Free French Vanilla Cappuccino' dispenser in my kitchen and keep it stocked for life. Because really what else is QT good for? Just kidding QT, you know I love you for your crushed ice and fountain Coke Zero. <3
Fin.

Title
So another issue with starting a blog for me, was coming up with a name. I've thought about blogging for a while now, but got totally stuck when it came to what to call it. Thanks a lot Creative Writing class, what did my parents tax dollars pay for!?
First, I really, REALLY wanted to go with '...and baby makes five!'
and freak everybody out perpetually, and then I also figured it would be a good hiding technique because if a future boss was looking for me online, he/she wouldn't think that this blog must be written by my incredibly gorgeous identical twin sister who has three kids. Genius, right? A foolproof plan as far as I'm concerned. Mr. Debbie Downer (that's Jamie's code name in this blog) didn't think so. Cue sad music as he stomps on my AMAZING blog name.
Next, I was going to go with 'Double Trouble' or 'Twintastic Adventures' or something equally hoaky, but I was going to do it in a sarcastic way. Because I don't want to live in a world where either of those blogs exist for real. Once again, DD said that no one would get it and that it was dumb. Dumb! These are million dollar ideas folks. This is also around the time when I stopped telling him my ideas.
Then, I was going to try to do a whole Dr. Mom thing, but believe it or not- all the variations of that theme were taken! For serious! It made me feel better that there are more SAHM's out there wasting their degrees, but then I started to really think about it, and the blogs are probably written by heart surgeons who are also moms. Also known as losers. More sad music.
Finally, I decided on Peanut, Buster and Jamie because I call P Peanut, H Buster and Jamie will confuse new readers as to if I am married to a man or a woman and that will add some mystery and therefore $$$. Right? Peanut is a no-brainer as my daughter is the size of a peanut and her name starts with P so alliteration and all. I started calling H Buster Brown when he was a baby, because in my sleep-deprived state I thought saying 'Buster Brown, Man around Town' would be cute, and it is, but only to me. =( And now he's turned into more of a Buster Bluth. Which I'm LOVING! And Jamie is the name of my (shhhhh, it's a secret!), one that I will maintain through the life of this blog and never blow his cover or anonymity.
The End. Of my five-paragraph essay with a mediocre use of transition words. Mrs. Long would be so disappointed in me.

I blame you, Kim
My Blog!
Hi! I did it! I started a blog! Now no one will be friends with me on facebook anymore because they won't have the joy of harassing me to start a blog, so really what's the point anymore?
So I've had a lot of qualms about starting a blog, and I figured it would make a good first blog post:
Reasons why I should NOT have a blog:
- Getting a job some day in the far, far, far, far, far, (one far for every year), far, far, far, far, far, far, far future.
For those of you who don't know, I graduated with my EdD (Educational Doctorate) in December 2010, six and a half months after my kids were born and I officially became a stay-at-home-mom (SAHM from here on out, I don't do dashes very well). So not the best timing. I started the program with the rainbow dreams and unicorn fantasies that getting pregnant would be no problem, I'd have one kid and life would resume to normal after my six-week maternity leave. That didn't happen, and pretty much as soon as I knew I was having twins, I knew I wasn't going back to work. But by this time, I was only a year out from graduating and it seemed super dumb too just quit. Plus, I like school and I really liked my Doctoral cohort at Maryville.
So fast forward three years and I'm loving staying at home, have absolutely no desire within any part of me to go back to work, but have this degree hanging over my head like the Sword of Damocles, and I know that I will have to go back someday, out of sheer boredom and the gentle prodding of my loving husband. So when I DO go back to work, I don't want some HR person to find this blog, declare me a crazy person, and then not hire me. Or when I do get a job, I worry about students/parents finding the blog, declaring me a crazy person, and then wanting to be my best friend.
So that's reason number one.
- Pedophiles/Devil Worshipers/General Bad Guys:
My kids are super cute obviously, little blonde- (blondish for H) haired, blue-eyed cherubs sent from heaven, which are also just like the kids that the devil worshipers want to kidnap on Halloween night. Or so my mom warned me from birth- 10th grade. And my kids have friends, and we do a lot with their friends, and I have an addiction to taking pictures of my kids and their friends, so if I post the pictures on the blog I worry about the weirdos in the world looking at them. And then my friends getting mad at me and I'd have to give my BE FRI part of the BEST FRIENDS heart necklace back. So I need to figure out some privacy settings. Bill Gates or whoever invented Google, if you're reading this could you call me please?
And that's reason number two.
- My grandparents/mom/aunts/anyone over the age of 55 who is easily scandalized
Believe it or not, I censor myself A LOT on facebook for the sake that my Grandpa is now my facebook friend, (thank you Dad), but before that it was because my aunt was my facebook friend, or the sweet older woman from the sorority, or basically anyone who I was afraid would read something and get all flustered and think less of me. Because I've pretty much been a goody-two-shoes people pleaser my whole life, and I kind of like the thing I have going with that. So no one tell my grandpa about this blog please. Unless I become wildly famous, then give me time to clean it up. This fear is also the only thing holding me back from being on The Real World, MTV has been straight buggin' me for decades to be on that show, but I just can't bring shame to my family's good name that way. Anyway...
that's reason number three. Which is a lot like reason number four...
- Republicans/Sports Fans
Now sports fans don't get your panties in a bunch, I'm not putting you in the same category as republicans it's just getting late and I am already over this whole blog thing. Kidding! Maybe?
Anywho, so you know during the election when everyone was putting on facebook 'Why can't we just agree to disagree' or 'I need to take a break from all this hate' I was sitting pretty because I straight up blocked yo ass if you dare said one bad thing about my man Barack Husein Obama. I LOVE OBAMA. I love everything about him, I love (almost) everything he's done, if he hijacked the constitution and made it a law that he was president for life, I would run naked through the streets shouting for joy. I love him. And I can't stand for one second to see anything negative about him or basically anything I value or believe, so at the first sight of a 'Like if you believe Obama is coming for your guns' or 'Like if you want to appeal Obamacare' I just go to my settings and hide the person. And then I wait a while and unhide them and see if the crazy has calmed down, and if it hasn't we go back to our secret facebook relationship.
Now this is not a political blog by any stretch of the imagination, but there are plenty times where I can get myself going into a good rant on facebook but hold back because I don't want to offend anyone. And this is where the sports fans come into play, there are lots of times where I want to set my status to 'Who the hell cares?' when there's some big, exciting basketball game that everyone is talking about or something, but I don't. So maybe one day I might blog about something 'controversial' (Did you hear that Adam Wainwright went to a Tea Party rally?) or a topic in the news (and by the news I mean featured on the Diane Rehm show, Morning Edition or All Things Considered), and it may not be sugarcoated because I don't want to sugarcoat it. And I don't want to hurt your feelings, but I gotta be me. Some of my very, very best friends are Republicans, some are sports fans, and a few are Republican sports fans, and if we can manage to live together and love each other, then there is truly hope for this blog. Am I rambling? Did I mention it was getting late?
So that's number four, and I feel like there should be five things, so...
-I can't think of a fifth thing. Global warming? I'm going to go with global warming for number five.
That's it! My first blog post! Thank you for reading this, the three people I will tell about it initially. And then everyone else eventually. Good night! (Do you do a send off in blogs? Is that bad blog behavior? This should have been my number five- I have no idea what in the hell I'm doing.)
